3-5 FutureKids Unit 3 ~ World's Fair Project

Description of the Unit:  In World's Fair, the students will use word processing and graphics skills to create a report that identifies problems at the World's Fair and suggests possible solutions.  The children are introduced to basic word processing skills as they enter text and change the font, size, style, and color; adjust the line spacing; and create headers and footers.  They practice graphics skills such as inserting appropriate clipart, selecting and applying different colors, using tools to create shapes and lines, and layering objects, to create a symbols sign, an exhibit schedule, a diagram of a food item, an international flag, a ride suggestion list, and a map of the fair.  In addition, the children explore the Internet to gather information about other world's fairs.

Lesson Four ~  In this lesson, the students will practice their wordprocessing skills as they format a paragraph by adjusting the line spacing; changing the text font, size, color; and setting new margins.  To create an international flag, they will modify an image of a person using the drawing tools in a paint program.  Then they will save the file and insert it into the flag by formatting the header and footer.

  Materials ~  Microsoft Word 2000  ~  Paint  ~  Template - PERSON.BMP  ~  Template - FLAG.DOC

Opening ~  Review Lesson 3, including inserting and customizing a table, adjusting the line spacing of a paragraph, and creating and applying a pattern to a WordArt title.  Remind the students that they used these skills to create an exhibit schedule.

Review the activities of inserting a saved graphics file into a wordprocessing document and labeling the different ingredients.

Inform the students that today they will design an international symbol for the World's Fair.  After formatting descriptive text in a wordprocessing document that will be included in the report, they will create a flag using the program's drawing tools.  Then a paint program will be used to create an image for the flag and the file will be inserted into the wordprocessing document.

Currently there is no internationally recognized symbol that represents the World's Fair.  It is the students' responsibility to design a flag for the fair that signifies diversity and promotes the unity of nations.

~ SAMPLE of Lesson Four : World's Fair Person Graphic~

The students will use Microsoft Paint to Create a person graphic to add to their flag.  Below is a sample of one person created:

The students worked on creating a flag for the World's Fair.  Below is a sample of a flag that can be created.  It also incorporated the "person" that was created using the Paint program during the same lesson.
