The Boy and the Seed

By Marcus Hayes

There once was a boy and his name was Christopher, but, people called him Chris.  Chris was a very good gardener.  He could plant a sunflower seed in 2001 and it live until 2007. He learned all this from his grandpa. His grandpa is probably the best gardener in town. One day, Chris said to his grandpa, “I’m running out of seeds, so can I borrow some?” His grandpa replied, “You sure can.” So Chris went home and planted the seed.  He kept a chart in his room so he could keep track of how many inches it grew per month.  The first month, it grew ten inches.  It grew ten inches a month for the next eleven months. At the end of the year, the flower died, and he added all of the inches together.  The flower grew 120 inches in one year. Chris had 32 more seeds left. He repeated the cycle over and over until it was his time had come.  But, he passed it down to his son, and soon, it became part of the family’s heritage.  And it all started with one seed!
