How to Skate
By: Katie Jones
Mrs. Baird’s Homeroom Gardner Magnet 4th Grade
If you want to have a whole lot of fun, then listen to these instructions about how to roller skate. Almost all the people I know want to go skating. That is why I want to tell you how to skate and have fun with the rest of us. I’ll tell you about getting skates, putting them on, finding your balance, keeping your balance and moving your feet.
First, you have to decide if you are going to rent skates or buy skates. My mom says that because I grow so fast, it’s cheaper to rent skates. So when you go to the skating rink, go to the counter where they rent skates. They will ask you what size you wear. I wear a two and one half in skates. That’s different from my shoe size. The skating rink people will help you the first time you rent skates so you get the right size.
When you get your skates, go sit down and put them on. Make sure you lace them up tightly. If you don’t lace them up tightly, you could hurt yourself worse if you fall. Now stand up and get your balance. Try to keep your balance before you walk slowly to the hand rails around the floor. Use the hand rails to help keep your balance while you start trying to skate by moving your feet like you are walking and sliding. Then start pushing your feet side to side slowly.
As you start to get the hang of sliding your feet along, let go of the rail and slowly keep skating. Try not to fall, because it will hurt. But it won’t hurt too badly. Everyone falls in the beginning. You will get used to it and won’t even care after a while because you will be skating so well. When you fall, just laugh at yourself, get back up, and keep skating.
You can start going around in the big circle of skaters before long. But try to stay away from the fast skaters. They can scare you and might fuss at you if you get in their way. The more you skate and practice, the better you will get.
I have taught you how to begin skating, and I hope you have fun when you start. Remember to get skates that fit, lace them up tightly, start out using the rail, and practice a lot.
We are VERY proud of you and
want to
